NEWBURY PARK, CA -- I'mma let you finish...but 2009 was one of the greatest years of all time!
What a year it has been. HORSECUT has seen its ups and downs but it seems like most of us are still alive. Though, it is understandable that he blogosphere isn't as lively now that we are all older and trying to make it in this chaotic world. WE ARE… no longer in the fantasy world that is Penn State. Let’s take a look at the events that have occurred in the year of 2009.
The year started with the continuation of the recession as people continued to lose their jobs and unemployment rates climbed like that game on Price is Right. Hopefully, all of you HORSECUTTERS out in the working arena don't fall as hard as the mountain climbers in that video. Speaking of that show, It's still weird to see Drew Carey as the host. In remembrance of Bob Barker, let's watch a funny video where he gets very irritated. Anyway, the US economy is struggling, but we have just the right guy to help us rebound. An estimated 1.8 million people crowded together to witness the inauguration of the first black president. What an inauguration it was! Who can forget the words of the new President as he looked out at the sea of faces to say "HELLOOO WASHINGTON"?
Then, the news headlines were dominated by things such as health reform, stimulus packages, Afghanistan, Pakistan, scandals, Kanye West is an idiot, serial killers, Susan Boyle, Halliburton, Sarah Palin is stupid, health reform, H1N1, health reform, pirate attacks, IPhone (got one by the way) and health reform. Whatever. In other news, Michael Jackson died. Im not gonna lie, that dude was weird but his music is second to none. Rihanna got beat up but now she's supposedly dating Drake. There's also a show about the Jersey Shore that is ridiculous. Blah blah blah...whatever.
Now, let's talk about what I really came here to blog about. SPORTS! If you know me well, then you know that I am an avid sports fan. Whenever my TV is on, I am most likely watching a game or ESPN. Unfortunately, the year started with a thorough thumping of Penn State at the Rose Bowl. The only thing more sad about our performance was probably the lack of passion from the USC fans (Dave can attest to this). However, Penn State doesn't disappoint for long because our basketball team won its first ever NIT by beating Baylor. I'm sure most of you watched the games (and if you didn't, shame on you!) but Taylor Battle is a BEAST! Furthermore, our football team has been decent this year. The defeats to Iowa and Ohio State were definitely very hard to swallow but I am very much looking forward to the Capital One Bowl (wish I could go Skip). On a random note, I wish Paterno would end his grudge with Pitt so we can renew our rivalry with them. And screw Notre Dame - we don't want your weak ass team in the Big Ten.
2009 was the year for the dynasties. North Carolina won it's 5th championship by beating Michigan State 89-72. The Pittsburgh Steelers won their 6th Superbowl by beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. The Los Angeles Lakers won their 15th NBA championship over the Orlando Magic. The New York Yankees won (or paid) for their 27th World Series over my Philadelphia Phillies. And Tiger Woods continues his dominance in... cheating on his wife? By the way, if you have been hibernating in a cave the past couple weeks, here is a very realistic (or hilarious) depiction of what happened.
As for 2010, I'm looking forward to a lot of things. The much anticipated bowl games will be exciting as usual but it's not a playoff so it's not that exciting. The NBA playoffs will be great again this year. I'm hoping for another Lakers-Celtics championship. Also, fantasy football has been very exciting this past year (the teams were pretty even and everyone actually paid this year!). Raven has dominated during the season but none of that really matters in the playoffs. Furthermore, we should definitely start up an NCAA tournament pool again this year for that is always a good time. Lastly, the end of the NFL season and playoffs are going bring hella thrills. Go Eagles!
Oh, and Per- sorry if I bored you with all the sports talk. Here are my favorite movies of 2009: District 9, Up, Inglorius Basterds, The Hangover, Zombieland, Bruno
(Avatar looks sick too but I haven't seen it yet)
I will leave you with this. Have fun celebrating!
