Director's Final Film Review...

... before returning to the good old USA in nine days.  First up is Darron Aronofsky's The Wrestler - To be honest I haven't seen Sean Penn in Milk, but Mickey Rourke should have gotten best actor.  He's pretty damn good as the old, broken, has-been, down-on-his-luck pro wrestler Randy "The Ram".  There isn't much of a plot to the film, it just follows the Ram around as he tries to reconnect with his daughter, deal with injuries and aging, and tryna with a tryna stripper.  The film is shot kind of like a documentary, lots of improv apparently, and it all works.  Add a couple of wrestling sequences and you got a great flick.

Next is The Sting, a reteaming of the great Paul Newman and Robert Redford.  Redford plays a small time conman who, with his aging partner, unknowingly cons a mob runner out of the cash he's transporting.  Next thing you know his partner's dead and he's gone into hiding in Chicago with an old friend of his partner's, an older looking Paul Newman.  Together they plan the biggest con of their lives against the very Irish mobster who had had Redford's partner killed.  At the same time a crooked police detective, a mob hitman, and the FBI are after Redford.  Best part about this movie is watching how Redford and Newman put together and pull off the con.  This film's just plain fun and fast paced, they even throw in the obligatory love interest only to get rid of her in a nice little twist.  Highly Recommended.

Finally, I got around to watching the other half of Grindhouse, Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, and like Planet Terror it's got a 70's vibe to it.  Except they have cellphones and ipods.  This film pretty much sums up my frustration with Tarantino - he's a great director but a lousy writer when you get right down to it.  Sure he can write some nice dialogue and some cool scenes, but in the end he just screws up the story.  In this one we follow a bunch of tryna jauns as they bullshit about sex, pot, guys, etc.  But it's still just bullshit and has nothing to do with the story.  After literally an hour of nothing you finally get a quick scene of action, only to have another half hour of more girl chats before a final showdown.  Did I mention Kurt Russell is a creepy stalker/killer with a "death-proof" stunt car?  He's great, and the final car chase is great, I really enjoyed it, but it doesn't make up for everything you have to sit through.  In good conscience I can't recommend this one, but I can give youtube links to the first car crash, a lapdance, and the final car chase

This just in - Woody Allen is doing a film starring Larry David. It's a match made in heaven.

Wrestler was great. Mickey Rourke was perfect, especially with an emotional ending. Sean Penn was really good too, per. Really, it's a toss up, but I think it had to go to Penn because he does some really gay things, like make out with dudes. I don't know if you saw Benjamin Button, but that was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It's basically forest gump, in reverse. Brad Pitt could have wonbest actor for that too. I think it was better than Slumdog, but that's just my take

Benjamin Button was decent, but it just didn't do it for me.
